The Annoyance of WordPress Comments

If you have ever read or run a wordpress blog, you’re probably plenty familiar with spammy comments. Apparently, there is some sort of business model in polluting blogs with linkspam (especially prevalent in Russian langauge) to drive search results.

I started using Disqus comments┬áin January 2011 after multiple plugins seemed to fail at the job. Maybe I get fewer comments on my blog, but I don’t have to worry about deleting the fake ones.

I highly encourage anybody that runs a blog to switch to a less open comment system in hopes that we may help eliminate the spam problem. I contemplate how the WordPress.org system itself could better prevent link spam (it does search for some key words and akismet does do a pretty good job) but it seems that many sites must not use these measures to prevent spam.
